SPRING & SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2005

Long Distance Learning

New in 2005.

Reading Window Long Distance Learning is now tested and available.

J.B., an 8 year old boy in 2nd grade, is being successfully tutored with Reading Window methods, without coming in person to the Reading Window School.

His grandmother talks to Piper Martin on the phone for coaching on "the next step". Grandma then reports back on the results of that lesson, and is coached on a new "next step" for the following day. J.B.'s focus right now is The Lion King. J.B. is making leaps forward in reading with comprehension. His teacher has already moved him to the top reading group in his class. Here is what his grandmother recently wrote about Jwhaun:

Mozell Booker is a retired school principal who lives in Fluvanna County in Virginia. She tells us she would like to see many more children benefit from Reading Window methods.

Coaching by phone may be the solution for those who live too far away for a daily trip to Louisa for the regular 6-week intensive course. If you can schedule a daily half-hour phone call with Piper Martin, plus a half-hour of actual tutoring, prepare to start seeing amazing results by the third week!

Because coaching by phone is so relatively new, Piper is currently limiting phone students to those who are now in K, 1st, or 2nd grade.

Phone (540) 872-1999, with your child's age and gender, to see if this new technique can help you and your child.

For the next few months, while this is a brand-new way for Reading Window School to help children, the School is only requesting modest weekly donations for this new service. Finding out more is only a click piper@readingwindow.orgor phone call away (540) 872-1999.

For Louisa County Students

This is our 8th year serving Louisa as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization whose mission is to help everyone - young and old alike - to read with enjoyment and understanding. We are now able to offer a wide range of tailor-made individual tutoring sessions to meet your family's needs. With our methods, outstanding reading success can be achieved by preschool, elementary-school, middle-school, high-school and adult students, including Senior Citizens. We can help those struggling with dyslexia, ADHD and other barriers to enjoyable reading. Because our goal is to serve everyone regardless of ability to pay, we depend on generous donations and grants for students who cannot afford to pay our full costs, which have risen recently to $20 per hour. Tell us what you can afford, and we will try to pay the rest with a scholarship. We are proud to announce a recent grant from Charlottesville-Albemarle Community Foundation for this purpose.

We operate out of the old library building (now handicapped-accessible) at 103 West Street in Louisa, VA. For more information and to make an appointment to visit the ReadingWindow, phone Piper Martin at (540) 872-1999 or Sherri Rosser at (540) 872-1998.

More Scholarships Always Needed

Piper,

Eli is doing so much better in school this year! He brings home a lot of A and B papers now and seems to be having a lot less trouble doing his homework, and he even asks for my help on certain papers before homework time -- this tells me he would rather do his homework right, rather than rush through it, just to get it done! But the most important reason for me to be excited about this year, is his reading progress. For the first time he has gotten an A in reading on his own grade level, instead of a grade behind. And he will read a book for enjoyment of it. Instead of being forced to.

Free Beginner's Book

If you have a pre-school or kindergarten child in your family, check out our free printable book -- Dog and dog-cat.

You can click on the link below to download a free printable version of Piper Martin's children's book entitled Dog and dog-cat. It is highly recommended for use as a child's first book, and designed to make fullest use of the Reading Window methods for ensuring that reading becomes and remains an enjoyable experience filled with understanding.

Download Dog and dog-cat (pdf)

Note: In order to view Dog and dog-cat, your computer must have Acrobat Reader installed. If you need to download Acrobat Reader, click here:

Please be patient in waiting for the book to appear on your screen. Some people, particularly those using dial-up Internet connections, can experience waits of about five minutes before the text and pictures appear in what at first is a blank white space in the middle of the screen.

After you print the book, it's best to use it as a series of loose numbered sheets. That's because we decided to keep the text large enough for a child's eyes, keep the pictures well separated from the text, and also leave space for the child to position the tools called "reading-windows" (or "windows") around the words on the page – and there's not enough space left on the page for binding. Even a staple would make it difficult to use the reading-windows properly.

To use the book most effectively to teach your child, you'll need a collection of reading windows. These can be easily made from cereal boxes or old playing cards or any other thin cardboard. Please email piper@readingwindow.org or phone (540) 872-1999 to ask whether detailed instructions for making and using windows are available yet. (We hope they will be soon!)
